For grown-ups · read this first
Children open a soaked bean, count the seeds inside a fruit, and grow beans in a jar for a week. Then they read the ayah that uses a growing seed as an example of giving.
Explorer ★ draws, circles, counts and says (often ages 4–7). Investigator ★★ predicts, tests, records and explains (often ages 7–11). Choose by your child, not by age. Siblings can do the same case at different levels.
A seed holds a tiny baby plant and a store of food. With water, warmth and air it germinates: the root grows down first, then the shoot grows up towards the light. A grown plant can make many seeds from the one it started with, which is why one bean plant can fill a pot with beans.
We share creation as signs to ponder, not as proof. If your child asks something about the religion that you are unsure of, ask a recognised asatizah together.

Wow, why?
Hold one dry bean in your hand. It looks fast asleep. Could this tiny bean become a whole plant, with many more beans on it? Let's find out!
☐ We tried it!
Read it together · Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261
The parable of those who spend their substance in the way of Allah is that of a grain of corn: it groweth seven ears, and each ear Hath a hundred grains. Allah giveth manifold increase to whom He pleaseth: And Allah careth for all and He knoweth all things. (2:261)
English: Abdullah Yusuf Ali
Read the ayah together. Listen for the numbers. How many ears? How many grains in each?

What do I notice? How do I know?
⚠ Grown-up help: Beans are small: keep them away from babies and toddlers. Wipe up any water.
Draw the opened bean and label its parts: the skin, the two halves and the tiny baby plant.
My labelled bean
⚠ Grown-up help: A grown-up does the cutting.
Count the seeds inside different fruits. One seed grew each of these plants.

⚠ Grown-up help: Use a plastic cup rather than glass with young children, and help with the water.
Predict which way the root will grow. Then measure the root and the shoot every two days.

What does this show me about Allah? What should I do?
Which name of Allah does this remind you of? Circle one.
The ayah uses a growing seed as an example about giving for Allah's sake. What does your seed jar show about small things growing?
Draw it too, if you like
